Where is the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes?

The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes lies beyond Mount Katmai on the Alaskan mainland across Shelikof Strait, from .Kodiak Island. From the floor of this remarkable valley millions of columns of steam ascend constantly. The vents through which the steam escapes disclose incrustations of great beauty, variety and color. There are masses of. bright yellow sulphur, red and blue ash and pure white siliceous material. It is possible to cook food over these steam jets, although it is necessary- to hold down- the vessel against the uprising steam. In the valley is a -natural bathing pool one end of which is cool and the other hot. The first explorations around Mount Katmai and in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes was made in 1916 by the National Geographic Society. During the second administration of President Wilson this region was set aside as a national monument.
